FIRST FUNDRAISER £3500 RAISED!

£3500 Raised what an achievement!

Following on our last blog in November 2017, we spoke about our reflections of running our first half marathon. This was a special event as it was also our first fundraiser for our newly formed charity Avalon. We established Avalon to support other parents and families after our daughter’s Autism diagnosis two years earlier.

So busy!

It’s been a busy few months, as well as managing full time careers my husband and I have been actively forming relationships with local businesses and funders to launch some of our respite and early intervention services.

Respite – Pay it Forward

Following on our last blog in November 2017, we spoke about our reflections of running our first half marathon. This was a special event as it was also our first fundraiser for our newly formed charity Avalon. We established Avalon to support other parents and families after our daughter’s Autism diagnosis two years earlier. It’s been a busy few months, as well as managing full time careers my husband and I have been actively forming relationships with local businesses and funders to launch some of our respite and early intervention services. Respite – Pay it Forward We are excited to report that we have formed a partnership with David Lloyd Rouken Glen in Newton Mearns to offer respite for parents and families. We will offer one day guess passes with access to gym and spa facilities for those that need it. If you are struggling with childcare there is a kids club on site and staff have experience dealing with autism as Ava uses these classes too.

This is a really effective way for parents to get some time out while investing in their own health and wellbeing. This is important, as it can often be the area that is forgotten or squeezed out when raising a child with special needs. This was certainly true for my husband and I. We were both struggling to come to terms with the diagnosis and focussed fully on Ava leaving little time to ourselves. This led to poor eating and drinking habits, low moods and over a longer period of depression. Once we committed to making small changes to our health and wellbeing everything else in started to change. Fitness has been a major coping strategy for us and it has brought us closer together as a family. This is why we want to pay it forward.

We have also partnered with the Links Centre in Glasgow. They provide access to counselling services, group work, stress management, relaxation techniques and emotional wellbeing for families in the Glasgow area. These are great services to for families that require additional support as they come to terms with the diagnosis. More information relating to these services will be available on our website.

Early Intervention

We have secured sponsorship from a local business to support early intervention which is a subject close to our heart.  When we had concerns about our daughter there was no support available and everything had to be self-funded.  This is such a tragedy when all the research tells us that early intervention can be the main differentiator in children with autism reaching their potential and living an independent life.

This is one of the reasons Avalon wanted to get involved.  We will be sponsoring one child through an innovative video based speech and language therapy called Gemini.  This has really helped our own daughter move from being completely non-verbal to using at least 50 new words!   We will be releasing a video about this soon so stay tuned!

If you know anyone that would benefit from any of these services, please get in touch at pam@avalon.scot

Finally, we are in the early stages of building our service offer at Avalon and we have big plans for 2018.  We have developed a 2018 fundraising timetable outlining our plans to support more families impacted by autism.  Tune into our next blog to find out more……
